So we have shades of grey on all sides — every quarter has a rotten apple or unreadable character, it seems, be they the stuffy noblemen unhappy with the Emperor that starts this book on the throne, or the completely shady members of the Guild of Assassins, with their underground, magically protected headquarters, or the average legionnaires and servants of the Empire. I was really impressed by the pacing of the book, and especially by the way he managed to weave together roobson the threads from the previous two books, adding in for good measure several other characters and ideas that were first heard of in his earlier Darkweaver series.

With the Emperor Surabar having been assassinated, Shalidar makes plans to place himself on the throne. The Imperial Trilogy, however, put a unique spin on the spy genre, combining it with the rather bloated high fantasy genre.
The way Mark Robson has expressed the romance is again quite stiff and somehow unrealistic. Had the Emperor, Surabar, really been assassinated?
