And one of the hopes of any bookclub I think, for me at least, is to find a gem, a book that you had never wanted to read but, having read through coercion, have been spellbound by. It recounts the travels of a Chinese man whose philosophy has been influenced by French psychoanalyst thought.

To be honest, I was suspicious of anything carrying the label ‘best-seller’ prior to picking this one up. Do you think it is appropriate or is the romance a little too much? And when Luo falls in love with the beautiful Little Seamstress, life and literature come together in a passionate romance. Eventually forbidden word becomes distributed and more earnestly horded toward feeling and purpose than if it were not.

In the end, it seems like the Cultural Revolution and the re-education process are just sort of there to make the story interesting, in spite of the seminal role that they should be playing in the text. She’s the tailor, for heaven’s sake. This is a gentle, magical book, quite unlike any seamstresz I have ever read.

Dai Sijie was born in China in Having never studied Chinese bazac, my knowledge and understanding of the last century in China is sketchy at best. The story principally deals with the cultural universality of great literature and its redeeming power.

Rights to the novel have been sold in nineteen countries, and it is soon to be made into a film. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t say that it was a good book by any means. Or some Balzac maybe. seamatress

The warmth and humor of Sijie’s prose and the clarity of Rilke’s translation distinguish this slim first novel, a wonderfully human tale.
